Businesses operating in such countries don’t seem to be concerned with human rights records of authoritarian governments, remaining silent, feigning ignorance or at worst helping authorities in their crackdown.
As practice shows, companies are more inclined to respect human rights when governments fulfil their duty to protect and hold companies accountable for abuses. However, business can play an important role when governments fail to protect human rights and international institutions choose not interfere when abuses take place.

As the International Labour Organization Convention 190 on violence and harassment in the world of work comes into force on 25 June 2021, global unions are launching a toolkit to support the Convention 190 (C190) and its Recommendation 206 (R206). The manual will provide thousands of unions around the world with critical tools for the fight to eradicate violence and harassment in the world of work.

The first Regional Forum on Business and Human Rights in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia convened representatives from governments, national human rights institutions, civil society, business and labour organisations at the regional level and also international level to discuss business and human rights. The Forum provided an opportunity to raise awareness of and promote implementation of the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) in the region. Moreover, the Regional Forum explored how existing vulnerabilities have been amplified and exposed by the COVID-19 crisis and discussed the need to view the crisis as an opportunity to drive change and build back better.
In this webinar, Shift President Caroline Rees says that for business to realize its full contribution to sustainable development, it must put efforts to advance respect for human rights at the heart of its strategy.
